Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum
Just seven miles east of downtown Denver is the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, a great place to spend a day surrounded by aviation and space history. The museum is located on the site of the former Lowry Air Force Base, which closed in 1994 after being open for 57 years. It has over 182,000 square feet of hangar space, which houses more than 30 aircraft and numerous other interesting exhibits.
Some highlights of the museum include a B-52 Stratofortress, which stands guard outside the main entrance; a B-1A Lancer, one of only four B-1A's ever built; an F-4 Phantom; an F-14 Tomcat; an F-104 Starfighter; and a Dream Chaser Spaceplane. Speaking of spacecraft, they even have a 3/4-scale model of the Incom T-65 Starfighter, which you might know better as the X-Wing Fighter from Star Wars.
In addition to the many aircraft on display, the museum has a world-class research library containing books, periodicals, photographs, brochures, manuals, documents, and scrapbooks (visit by appointment only). There are also exhibits about the Cold War, a history of avionics, an aviator uniform collection, aircraft engines, and a Rocky Mountain Airways Flight 217 Memorial, among others.
Should you get hungry, there are several options just steps from the Museum's entrance, including the Lowry Beer Garden (with brats, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and bowls), Cafe Mercato, North Country (fish tacos), Officers Club, WoodGrain Bagels, the Rocket Ice Cream Shop (seasonal), and the Copper Door Coffee Roasters coffee shop.

Until next time, keep looking to the sky and keep dreaming.
