Name that airport
Today's post features a photo I took on a recent commercial airline flight. Do you know what airport and what city this is (don't peek, answer is below the photo)?
That's Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE), which is located about 6 miles south of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The airport is named in honor of United States Army General Billy Mitchell, who was raised in Milwaukee. Originally established in 1920 as Hamilton Airport, it has gone through several name changes, including Milwaukee County Airport, General Mitchell Field, General Mitchell International Airport, and now finally Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (as of February 2019). The terminal houses the Mitchell Gallery of Flight (https://www.mitchellgallery.org/), a non-profit aviation museum with exhibits that highlight aviation history and some of Milwaukee's contributions to the aerospace industry. The museum is before security, so you don't need to be flying to visit.
There are also several aircraft on display in and around the airport. Inside the terminal (also before security), there is a Crites 1911 Curtiss Pusher (authentic reproduction built using many parts from an original Curtiss Pusher). Outside the southwest corner of the airport parking structure there is a North American TB-25M Mitchell. And near the airport's main entrance, in front of the USPS post office on Howell Avenue, there is a McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II on display. I'll go into more detail about these aircraft in a future blog post.
Until next time, keep looking to the sky and keep dreaming.
